Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt, Death and Life, 1910/15 © Leopold Museum, Vienna
This painting makes a strong impression. On the right, different kinds of people are tangled. On the left, a skull-faced grim reaper is gazing at them. It gives tension between the two things. Also, the background of this panting is gray dark. So I felt spooky when I looked at this picture for the first time. It looks like the grim reaper is waiting to reap the souls of the people. But the people, who represent life, are peaceful and calm. They don't seem to know death is coming. A young woman who carries a baby looks like she is having a sweet dream. An old woman who is under the baby has a frown on her face. Maybe she feels that death is waiting for her. The couple at the bottom are leaning on each other. In my opinion, they ignore the grim reaper with love. Although the theme of this painting is serious, I fell in love with it. The colors are pleasing to my eyes. The patterns of this picture are artistic - even the grim reaper looks elegant. Klimt was past middle age when he drew this painting. It's one of his later works. I think he focused on this kind of theme naturally, because he was getting old.                                                                                                                                                                              By Daisy 정유정 for 마틴나탈리교수의 수업 예술활동을 통한 영어
