Robber of the Sparrow’s Nest

“Robber of the Sparrow’s Nest” 1712, by Jean-Antoine Watteau, Scottish National Gallery
22.6 x 18.5cm, oil on paper on canvas

I saw this small painting in a travelling exhibition in Seattle years ago. In the painting you can see a couple sitting very comfortably together on some rocks in a forest landscape. The man has found a nest with eggs in it, and he is showing it to the woman. He looks excited, but she seems to be more interested in resting against him than in looking at the nest! You can see the just the tips of her yellow shoes – but they don’t look like hiking shoes. Beside them sits a dog, maybe tired from playing. I like the way the yellow colors in the painting make a sort of heart shape in the middle of the dark colors. What do you think about this painting? Is it real, a dream or a scene from a play?
